NIGHT OF STARS

Autor del poema: Fray Luis de León Translation by Aubrey F. G. Bell
I 1
When I behold the sky 5
With stars innumerable sprangled bright 10
And then the Earth descry 5
Encompassed with night 6
Buried in sleep, oblivion infinite, 11
II 1
Sorrow and love arise 8
And with a burning fever fill my breast, 9
And ever from mine eyes 8
The tears flow without rest, 6
Till my tongue speaks at length, by grief oppresed: 10
III 1
O dwelling of great might, 6
Temple of lovely light incomparable, 11
My soul that to thy height 4
At birth aspired, what spell 7
Doth in this dark, low prison-house compel? 11
IV 1
What mortal folly thus 5
From truth's possession can remove our sense, 12
So that oblivious 5
Of thy blest gifts, it thence 6
Strays and seeks tinselled joys and vain pretence? 12
V 0
Man lives imprisoned 7
In sleep and recks not of his destiny 9
While still with silent tread, 7
At Heaven's swift decree, 6
Hour after hour his life doth from him flee. 11
VI 1
Ah mortal men awake 7
And turn your thoughts intent upon your loss! 10
Shall souls divine forsake 8
Such blessings for the cross 6
Of life unreal and dull delusion's dross? 11
VII 1
O skyward lift your eyes, 6
Unto this heavenly eternal sphere! 10
And you will then despise 7
The vain delights that here 7
Offers our life, its every hope and fear; 12
VIII 1
Petty, if we compare 6
The fleeting span of this low earthly scene 10
With that great region where 7
In noblest forms are seen 7
What is and what shall be and what hath been. 10
IX 1
Who sees the eternal fires 8
With fixed laws move on their heavenly way, 11
How each with each conspires: 7
Uneven their array, 6
Yet, varying, they one ordered scheme obey; 13
X 0
How in the moon's clear train, 6
As she her silver sphere doth onward move, 12
Goes light of wisdom's rain, 6
And, gleaming there above, 8
Follows, serenely fair, the star of love. 11
XI 1
But blood-red angry Mars 5
Choses unto himself another way, 10
While, girt with thousand stars, 7
Jupiter, clear alway, 6
Benignly calms the heavens with his loved ray; 11
XII 1
And yonder in the height 6
Whirls Saturn, father of the Age of Gold, 11
And after him the bright 6
Stars in fair choir enrolled 7
Their light and all their treasures still unfold; 11
XIII 1
Who may all this descry 5
And pleasure still in this vile Earth retain, 12
Who will not groan and sigh 6
To rive the imprisoning chain 9
XIV 1
Lo here dwells sweet content, 7
Peace reigns, and on a rich and lofty throne 11
Sits holy love, and blent 6
Together in its zone 7
Delight and honour are evermore at one. 14
XV 0
Here beauty infinite 7
Unveils itself, and light, quintessence pure, 12
Transparent gleams: no night 6
Its radiance may obscure, 8
Spring's flowered splendour here is ever sure. 13
XVI 1
O fields of truth most fair! 6
O meadows verily ever fresh and bright, 10
Mines full of riches rare! 8
O fountains of delight! 6
Deep valleys with a thousand blessings dight! 10
